Crafty

Last year, I picked up a "polymer clay" hobby from my Aunt. I made a bunch of jewelry; mostly pendants. I sold one on my Etsy site and my sister sold about 8 at her work.... but that's another post. I was looking for a new hobby that wasn't so time consuming and didn't anchor me to a table and oven when my sister told me about "amigurumi", adorable, little, crocheted animals. I bought all the supplies; yarn, crochet hooks, doll eyes, yarn needles, stuffing etc. I youtubed how to crochet and got started. I had a really hard time relaxing and not making the stiches so tight that I couldn't get the hook through. I managed to make a couple little squares, then gave up on amigurumi altogether. My sister still rocks. She's made a cat, bunny, lamb, hippo, and more. I still like crocheting, so I started making afghans. And haven't stopped...

This is the first afghan I made. Actually it isn't finished. I still want to add about 6"-10" and a border. I made it by holding together 2 strands of yarn in brown and blue using a half double crochet stitch throughout. It's pretty big. I've used 24 skeins of yarn so far and it almost covers our queen size bed.

I made this one for my sister in law when I heard she was diagnosed with lung cancer. I thought it would be nice for her to have something cuddly and colorful while in the hospital or chemo. it's lap size. Roughly 36"x50"? I used a multi-color yarn using a single crochet for the main body and double crochet in the "golden" stripes and all the way around.

This is my current project. I found this pattern and absolutely had to make it. Unfortunately, I still don't know how to read a crochet pattern (ch sl st hdc dc sc... yikes!). So my mom deciphered the pattern and showed me how. This time I held together a strand of beige and a strand of dusty purple. The afghan is basicly a giant "granny square". It's been a really fun pattern to work with.

This one turned out so great! This is an afghan I made for Sophia. Her birthday is coming up. I need to hustle to get it in the mail. The colors I chose are perfect for a little girl. When we visited her a couple weeks ago, she said that her favorite color is "baby" blue, so I put that color in the middle and around the border. I think she'll love it. It's pretty lightweight, so she'll be able to use it as a "coverlet" over her existing bedding and not get too warm. I also plan on making a heavier afghan for next fall/winter.

I love to crochet. I can literally sit and crochet for hours. It's a great hobby to do when I'm on a plane or a long road trip. And our living room is so cozy with a basket of yarn by the sofa. I can't wait to learn how to read patterns so I can do more creative/unique designs.

  1. Everything you have made is so beautiful! I loved having my blanket with me at the hospital to remind me of home. Sophia's blanket is so pretty, she is going to love it!
